Our Story

The Jericho City of Praise is a baptist church in Landover, MD founded in 1969 by the late Bishop James R. Peebles, Sr. and the late Apostle Betty P. Peebles. What began as a small Baptist mission meeting in a basement is now a congregation of more than 20,000 members. The Peebles expanded the church’s original Douglas street location in 1978 in order to establish the Jericho Christian Training Center/College, and in 1995 purchased 82 acres in Landover, Maryland to further accommodate their growth.

Following the death of Bishop James in 1996, and that of their son, Assistant Pastor James R. Peebles, Jr. in 1997, Apostle Betty continued their mission with completion of a new structure and the church’s current home—Jericho City of Praise. In 2002, the church not only purchased the 15-acre Jericho Business Center but it also took on development of the Jericho Residences, a 270-unit luxury apartment community for active adults ages 55 and older. June 28, 2009 marks the official celebration of its ribbon cutting.

This beautiful facility features amazing one, two and three-bedroom residences,as well as countless amenities including a fitness center, chapel and library. Whether you’re enjoying the theater and billiards rooms, or the barber and beauty shops, the Jericho Residences are far more than just luxury apartment homes. They are built on a foundation of family. They stand strong in their sense of community. And they offer an unparalleled lifestyle for the time of your life.
